Because I'm Happy!

During my LIS 724 technology course this semester, my positive outlook on technology use in education has remained the same. I continue to think and know that technology can be used to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom when used with thoughtful planning. Now, after taking this class, my view of blogging, professional learning networks, and websites portfolios have expanded.

Blogging Journey

I have always been interested in blogging, but I did not know how to start. I am glad that this course forced me to start my blogging journey! I have enjoyed writing from a young age, and it is fun to have a writing outlet as an adult through blogging. I would like to use blogging in my future career, however, I am still pondering which path I will take.

Professional Learning Network (PLNs)

I believe that expanding my professional learning network will always be beneficial for my career. I am delighted to have learned about Twitter chats in this class. Twitter chats are a great way to meet like-minded educators, gain new teaching resources, and share thoughts and ideas with other teachers. I enjoyed how people were very kind and supportive on Twitter, but it was a bit overwhelming for me. Anyway, I will continue extending my professional learning network throughout my career.

Website Portfolio

Creating a website showcasing my e-portfolio was a really fun part of this course. One of my favorite aspects of building a website is the creative part including choosing the layout, fonts, graphics, and color scheme. I think the website portfolio is an excellent way to showcase my technology skills for a potential employer, however, I have never had an employer review my portfolio. Nevertheless, I know that employers will do a Google search on me and check my social media accounts. Who knows? Maybe they will discover my website too!

Future and Beyond

I feel SO HAPPY that I will earn my school library endorsement in one month from now! I need to finish one more course that ends in August and take the library information specialist test to become certified. I already have my master's degree in education, and I am considering completing the MLIS degree as well. I'm really excited about the opportunities in my future!

Twitter Chat Connections

My First Twitter Chat! I found my first Twitter chat to be very exciting! At first I tried to join some Twitter chats, but they were not running so I was disappointed, and I was nervous that I would not find any chats to join. However, I discovered a Twitter chat called  #BuildHOPEedu   in my Twitter feed, and  the moderator for  #BuildHOPEedu   was Roman Nowak @NowakRo.  I joined  #BuildHOPEedu  pretty easily using Tweetdeck. Tweetdeck was helpful to keep the the tweets focused on the chat, but on the other hand, all of the columns were a bit distracting. Everyone on the chat was very kind, and I felt super happy when someone liked my tweet! (Author's Image) Mentor Teachers As you can see from the graphic below, the topic for the Twitter chat was about mentors for teachers. When I was a first year teacher in 2004, I did not have a formally assigned mentor, but I did find a mentor teacher on my own who helped me through my first year. In 2012 and ...

Engaging Students: Community Book Clubs

What is Active Learning?  Active learning takes place when students are doing rather than passively receiving information. According to The Center for Teaching Innovation at Cornell University , active learning takes many different forms including reading, writing, discussing, thinking, evaluating, designing, and solving problems just to name a few. The role of the teacher in active learning is to provide timely and frequent feedback in order for students to correct mistakes and understand the material better.  How Does Active Learning Help Students? Active learning is more engaging and motivating for students.  The application of information will stick longer in students' memories. Using different learning modalities (thinking, discussing, writing, etc.) allows students to process information in the way that best suits their learning style. A classroom community is built when students are actively working together on shared objectives and projects, and when students work...
